Professional Rodent Pest Control – Brisbane & Northside
When we investigate a rodent problem, the initial investigation is essential to determine the species present, estimate the size of the population, identify entry points to the building and any nesting sites.
As part of this inspection we carry out a risk assessment and we discuss any safety concerns. This impacts the choice of products and design of the treatment.
Our primary products for control of rodents are rodent baits (which we always place in lockable bait stations). In areas where baits may not be appropriate we will use traps, which also may be placed inside lockable stations, depending on the location.
Our rodent expertise allows us to select the appropriate products and place the required amount in the necessary locations to deliver optimal control.
Rat Pest Control
Rat pest control is a bit trickier than pest control for mice, as rats tend to be neophobic, which means they are frightened of new things. This means if we place a bait station or trap in their foraging area, they are likely to ignore it for several days before taking a closer look. This is a key reason why rat control, even of a single rat, generally takes longer than mouse control. Rat control can take a minimum of 1-2 weeks.
If there is an established rat population or infestation, it gets trickier still, as the social structure of rat populations is a bit more complicated than mice populations. Rats have dominant animals in any social group, which will dominate food sources. In such populations, after the initial delay for the rats to accept the bait, it is the dominant animals that will eat the bait first and often, only after they die will the other rats have a chance to feed on the bait. This means control may take several weeks.
With rat pest control treatments, identifying the species as a roof rat or Norway rat is essential as it impact bait placement – roof rats can be better targeted with baits in the roof, Norway rats better targeted with baits at ground level.
Mice Pest Control
Pest Control for mice is generally easier than for rats as they are very inquisitive animals. The will readily nibble bait as soon as it’s placed, as long as it’s placed in their foraging area. They do have the same dominance structure as rats and so if several mice will readily share the same bait. If baits are placed in the right location, mice problems can normally be controlled in a bit over a week. For infestations it can take longer.
How do rodent baits work?
Most rodenticides are anticoagulants. The work by thinning the blood. Within a couple of days the rodents start bleeding internally, fall unconscious and die. Rats and mice only needs to eat a small amount to get a lethal dose (they normally get enough in a single feed), although they will continue to eat the bait for a couple of days.
What to expect with our rodent treatments?
Treatments with rodent baits will take 4-7 days to start killing mice and 1-2 weeks to start killing rats. If there are only a few rodents present, this should be the problem eliminated. However, if there is a larger infestation or rodents keep coming in from outside, it may be necessary to carry out additional visits to top up the bait stations. Rodent are quite intelligent, so every now and then we get a problem job, where the rodents don’t want to take the first bait provided, so we sometimes need to be patient or change our strategy.
Types of Rodents in Brisbane
There are three main types of pest rodent in Brisbane:
- House mouse
- Roof rat (also called black rat or ship rat)
- Norway rat (also called the brown rat or sewer rat)
House mouse
The house mouse is found in houses and commercial buildings across Brisbane and indeed worldwide. Although they will dig burrows outside, they far prefer to find a place to nest inside buildings – behind cupboards, in boxes, inside furniture! They don’t forage far from their nest, so if you have a mice problem you know the nest is nearby (generally within 5 m).
Roof rat
The roof rat is the more common of the pest rats in Brisbane and although it is also called the black rat, it can vary in colour from black to grey to brown. It is noticeably smaller than the Norway rat, has bigger ears and its tail is longer than its body – very useful to help balance when its climbing. As its name suggests it spends a lot of time in areas above ground – it will nest in trees or roof voids.
Norway rat
The Norway rat is a big rat and is generally found at ground level and even below ground – there’s a reason it’s called the sewer rat. It has smaller ears than the roof rat and its tale is shorter than its body. It typically lives in burrows but will adapt to a variety of nesting places in and around buildings.

Tips for Preventing Rodent Infestations
Rodents come inside buildings looking for food and nesting places. So, to rodent proof your home and make it less attractive to rodents, it’s necessary to eliminate potential food sources, prevent rodents from entering the building and reduce the number of potential nesting sites.
Eliminate Potential Food Sources
- Make sure all opened food packets are placed in sealed, rodent proof containers
- Don’t leave pet food out (especially dry dog good and bird seed)
- Make sure dirty dishes and food spills are cleaned away before going to bed
- Placed all garbage in sealed bags inside bins with well fittind lids
Prevent Rodent Entry
Stopping rats and mice entering buildings is a challenge, as rats can squeeze through gaps the size of the end of your thumb and mice through gaps the size of the end of your little finger.
- Make sure doors, windows and insect screens are well fitted
- Seal any gaps around utility pipe entry points through the external wall and up from the sub-floor (if you have one)
- Cut back any branches which over hang your roof (which is an easy way for roof rats to enter)
Reduce Potential Nesting Sites
Rats and mice are very timid creatures. They are nocturnal and avoid open spaces – they will often move around the edges of rooms.
- Remove or trim back vegetation around the edges of the building
- Remove belongings from the roof void and sub-floor
- If you need to store goods, place them in sealed plastic boxes
