Professional Spider Pest Control – Brisbane & Northside

As with all our treatments, we carry out an inspection before the spider pest control treatment to identify the all the spider hiding places. This is particularly important for web-building spiders, such as redbacks and black house spiders, which can hide in all sorts of crooks and crannies.

Pest control for spiders includes spraying around the perimeter of the building, paying particular attention to eaves, windows and doors, and entry points. It is also important to focus on any fencing, especially tubular fencing (which is a favourite hiding spot for redbacks), and any BBQ areas and outdoor furniture. We will also treat sub-floors and roof voids as required. We don’t always spray inside for spiders (as spiders are generally outside and come inside “by accident”), but we will do spot treatments indoors if required.

What to expect with our spider treatments?

With our spider sprays, you will start to see dead spiders within an hour, with more dead spiders seen the following morning.

After a treatment it’s a good idea to leave any webs in place for a day or two, to make sure any hidden spiders have come out onto their web and picked up a lethal dose of insecticide. After that, webs can be removed by brushing them down. Don’t wash the webs down with water as it will wash away the insecticide treatment!

We offer a 6-month warranty on spider treatments, although the duration of protection can vary, depending on how exposed the treated area is to sun and rain. Not only will it kill spiders present, it will prevent them returning and building their webs.

Running / hunting spiders (white-tailed spiders and huntsman) and more difficult to kill as they don’t have webs and so only pick up insecticide when they walk over treated surfaces. Although they will pick up the insecticide and subsequently die, this does mean they may occasionally still enter the house before dying. (No pest manager can provide 100% guarantee this won’t happen!). However, the spider treatment has another advantage – by quickly eliminating the web-building spiders and insects on which the running spiders feed, it makes your home far less attractive to running / hunting spiders and so they are less likely to stay around your home anyway.

Carrying out our spider prevention tips (see below), will also help make your home less attractive to spiders.

Where do the spiders live and build their webs?

Spiders can be grouped into web-building spiders, which build obvious web and generally stay in one place, and running or hunting spiders, which don’t build webs and move around hunting for their prey.

Web-building spiders

Web-building spiders such as redback spiders and black house spiders build webs to catch their prey. Redbacks building their webs in dry, sheltered locations – vents, fencing (especially metal tubular fencing), under rocks and logs and inside, around down lights. Their webs are often a messy, fish net like structure, often including debris, like dead leaves. Black house spiders build dense, funnel shaped webs around windows, doors and eaves.

Running or Hunting spiders

Running spiders such as the white-tailed spider and huntsman spiders generally do not build webs, but rather wander around hunting for their prey. They will rest in tight spaces, such as under rocks, under the bark of trees, or under clothes left on the ground!

Spider bite information

Spider bite first aid

The recommended first aid for a spider bite (St. John’s Ambulance) is:

  1. Get the victim to sit down and try to get them to relax
  2. Clean the bite with water and disinfectant
  3. Apply an ice pack to the bite area to relieve the pain
  4. See medical attention if the pain persists and becomes severe (especially for redbacks)

If you happen to get bitten by a funnel web – there are tree dwelling funnel web spiders in southeast Queensland, then you should apply snake bite first aid (pressure bandage) and call for medical assistance immediately.

Tips for Preventing Spider Infestations

To prevent spiders coming into the house, it’s important to eliminate all possible entry points:

  • Make sure all windows and doors close tightly
  • Ensure insect screens and draft excluder are well fitted
  • Seal up any other cracks, crevices and potential entry points (eg. around utility pipes)

Spiders only set up home if there is a suitable habitat to build their webs and plenty of food around (insects and other spiders). Keeping the area adjacent to the building free of vegetation (or at lest well trimmed back) will make your home less attractive to spiders. However, a general pest spray once a year will keep both spiders and insects in check – not only does this keep your home pest free, but it eliminates the food that makes your home attractive to spiders.
